    Description

MATTED 1983 FIRST DAY COVER HONORING FIRST POWERED, CONTROLLED MANNED AIRSHIP
This first day cover was issued on July 18, 1983 in Granada to honor the 100th anniversary of the fight.  Air travel was by balloon, but inventors
    wanted
a way to make a balloon more navigational. Charles Renard and Authur Krebs from the French Engineering Corp conceived a design which they called a
    dirigible
    and patriotically christened, "
    La France
." When it was first flown on August 9, 1884, Renard and Krebs were delighted to
discover that their dirigible was so easy to steer that it could actually return to its point of take-off. It was credited with being the very first practical airship.
